Tom Misch
Its official, we now have the album of the summer.
The search is over for 2018's sounds of the summer, Geography by Tom Misch has taken the title with its groove jazz beats and contemporary vocal pairings is an orgasmic listening experience.
What can I say, I've been following this gent since his beginnings, since we went to the same school i've felt an even deeper sense of pride seeing him flourish and take the 'alternative' music scene by storm. His music is unapologetically peachy, his upbeat down beats with his smooth vocals makes for a chilled out yet funky vibe.
Previous to Geography I was proper in to his track on Loyle Carner's album 'Damselfly' as well as one of his first tunes 'Crazy Dream.' The mixture of techno sounds with a more classic jazz beat is modern and interesting, love that new funk. Tom and Ben's pairing is perfect together, both keeping their South London roots at the forefront of their vocal stylings.
His new album Geography is a cracker. You can tell a shit load of time has gone into it to create each of the very unique tracks. Each has its own personality and feeling. My favourite song has to be 'Disco Yes' with the vocals of Poppy Ajudah is a classic summer beat that just makes you want to dance. It warms the room- I love it.
Of course I also love the cover of 'Isn't She lovely,' as a professed Stevie Wonder mega-fan I must say this bashful cover was coy and gentle but was just so nice to listen to. If you ever want your spirits lifting just whack that on and you're golden.
Amidst the cheerful, warm and sunny tracks Tom tacks us down a more sultry road with his track 'Man Like You.' In my opinion it feels cooler and evokes the feeling of longing, longing for someone or something you used to know, even if it is just a former version of yourself. We as individuals do get lost in the big dark blue...
I'll still be looking for an album that tops this as the summer sound of 2018 but i'm not likely to find it, keep me posted with more bands big or small I want to hear them.
